3 Key Tips for Choosing the Right Fishing Net

In aquaculture, selecting the right fishing net is more important than many realize. Most nets on the market are made from nylon or polyethylene, materials known for their corrosion resistance, softness, and affordability. However, many farmers have recently reported frequent damage to their nets during daily operations.

To ensure durability and protect your fish stock, here are three critical factors to consider when choosing a fishing net:

1. Check for Burrs on the Net Frame

Inspect the frame closely — if there are too many burrs or sharp edges, they can scratch or injure the fish, increasing the risk of infection. Even visually, you can assess the craftsmanship of the net. Since this is one of the most frequently used tools in aquaculture, a net that harms the fish is unacceptable.

2. Feel the Frame and Netting Material

Run your hand along the frame. Is it rough or prone to snagging? Check if the netting itself feels soft or stiff. Rigid materials tend to become even harder over time, especially after repeated exposure to disinfectants. Soft, flexible nets last longer and are safer for delicate fish.

3. Test Netting Strength and Handle Flexibility

Try gently pulling a section of the net — if it easily unravels or sheds threads, that’s a sign of poor quality. This becomes a serious issue when netting more active or aggressive fish, which can tear low-quality nets apart during handling.

Also inspect the handle: does it bend too easily, or does it have balanced flexibility and strength? A good handle has some give to help with control underwater, especially when water adds weight — but it shouldn’t bend like wire.

🐠 Choosing the Right Size for Your Fish

Small fish: A net frame diameter of around 50 cm is usually enough — this is commonly referred to as a “dip net.” These are often made from mosquito mesh, with mesh size between 2.5–3.5 mm.

Larger fish (8 cm or more): Use a “large-eye net” with mesh openings of 0.8–1 cm and a net frame diameter of 55–100 cm.

Match the shape to the tank: Use round nets for round tanks, and rectangular nets for straight-edged tanks — this ensures better fish capture with less effort and fewer escapes.

🧠 Pro Tip: Match the Mesh Size to the Setting

For home or office tanks, standard mesh sizes work well.

For commercial farms, wider mesh nets may be more suitable, depending on the fish species and harvesting practices.

🛠️ Quality Nets Mean Better Fish Health & Lower Costs

By following these tips and selecting nets made from durable materials with thoughtful design, you can reduce fish injuries, extend equipment lifespan, and streamline your aquaculture operations.

At the end of the day, the right net isn’t just a tool — it’s part of your farm’s success.
